Antique American Brass Menorah with "Der Tog" Hallmark, Circa 1920

About the Item

This brass Hanukkah menorah, made in the United States around 1920, was likely a promotional item for the Yiddish newspaper Der Tog (The Day), a widely read publication among Jewish immigrants in New York. Many Jewish newspapers at the time offered gifts to subscribers, and this menorah may have been one such incentive. The design features seven curved branches reminiscent of the biblical Temple Menorah, with the shamash in the form of a two-handled oil jug, referencing the cruse of pure oil from the Hanukkah story. A Star of David is prominently displayed at the center, reinforcing Jewish identity. The base is adorned with a striking lion motif, symbolizing the Lion of Judah, a traditional emblem of strength and heritage in Jewish art. The textured detailing on the branches and base adds to its artistic appeal. Menorahs of this type have appeared in private collections and even in popular culture, such as the 2009 Coen Brothers film A Serious Man. This piece reflects not only Jewish religious tradition but also the cultural and immigrant experience of American Jews in the early 20th century.

18th Century Galician Brass Hanukkah Lamp Menorah
Located in New York, NY
Cast brass Hanukkah Lamp, Galicia, 18th century. The backplate is cast and pierced featuring dense scrollwork. The side panels fitted with two servant lights, fronted by a row of eight oil fonts. Scholars theorize that these Polish Chanukah Lamps that bear two servant lights (as opposed to the singular servant light normally found on a Chanukah Lamp), served a purpose, having been used on one of the days that Chanukah fell on the Sabbath, as Sabbath Candlesticks. This lamp was made by the technique known as "sand casting". This process begins with a wooden mold that was carved out to create negative space, which in turn is used to make the inverse form or shape to be used for the casting of metal. The mold is pressed into fine sand mixed with clay, then removed, and molten brass poured into the impression. When a mold wears out, a casting from that mold is often used as the mold for the next generation. Those later lamps...
