Antique Gothic Revival Silvered Bronze Crucifix with a Gilt Bronze Corpus Christ
About the Item
Good size and impressive make, Gothic church altar crucifix.
This ornate and all hand-crafted, bronze table crucifix comes with a good quality made and finely detailed, gilt bronze corpus of Christ. This former church altar table crucifix is decorated with several other meaningful Gothic elements as well. The stylized, golden ray of light halo behind Christ being one of them. We know that this can only have been owned by a church (or monastery), because this would have been a very expensive relic. Since churches were among the most financially sound institutions, they were able to afford an ornate and very- expensive-to-create piece like this. The fact that it is possible (and even obligatory) to screw this cross onto a table also is an indication that this crucifix was once in a church where it would have been protected against opportunist thieves. If you are a private collector and/or a devout enthousiast and you don't want it srewed into a table then you can also decide to place this unique crucifix on a wooden base. The amazing details and interesting history behind its design also make this former church relic a unique talking piece.
