Antique Large Folk Art Handcrafted Wooden Fretwork Crucifix or Cross and Stand

About the Item

This extremely detailed and ornately handcrafted wooden Folk Art Crucifix is unsigned, but presumed to have been made in Eastern Europe, possibly Austria, in circa 1920. The cross and Stand are both intricately cut and carved of a softwood and a plated cast Jesus figure has been added. The body of the cross is done with fretwork vines and leaves and a stylized Sun's rays surrounding Jesus. The ends of the arms and the top are also detailed with fretwork leaves and scrollwork. The cross is composed of two pieces of wood, joined with notches in a primitive Folk Art manner. The base is a series of panels of cut and carved fretwork which are fitted and nailed to form the pedestal styled base. This is a fairly large and well executed Folk Art Crucifix standing just of twenty-one inches in height and in very good period condition.

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. One small break noted on the upper area of the rear panel and likely a small detail missing from the very top of the cross. There may be wear to an outer edge or corner as presented in the photos and consistent with age and use.
