About the Item
Stunning and unique 'sermon on the mount' wall plaque with Jesus and the apostles carved in high relief.
This large size work of religious art depicts Jesus in the middle and He is flanked by six apostles on either side. This Gothic church wall panel looks to be from the Dutch Gothic Revival era in the 1800s and we have never seen this scene hand carved in such a large and detailed manner. It must have taken one very skilled sculptor months rather than weeks to perfectly hand-carve this famous biblical scene and the result is highly impressive. The large size, the many Gothic details, the detailed sculpture of Christ, the depth of the carvings, the large size, the perfect patina, the very good condition, the rareness and ofcourse the deeper meaning and importance of this church relic, we think, makes this a once in a lifetime find. This striking and all hand carved, symbolic panel may originally have been part of a church pulpit. Thanks to a pair of antique metal hooks on the back (that were put on later) it can easily and safely be hung on your wall where it can be enjoyed and worshipped by you(r congregation) and by generations after you. From the same collection we also purchased a matching Gothic panel (see image 19) depicting another sermon on the mount scene. We will advertise that panel on 1stdibs soon too.

For the collectors of stunning antique church relics we are also offering this marvelously hand carved pelican sculpture for wall mounting. The character ascribed to the pelican in this context is nearly as fabulous as that of the phœnix. From a clumsy, gluttonous, piscivorous water-bird, it was by the growth of legends transformed into a mystic emblem of Christ, whom Dante terms "Nostro Pelicano". St. Hieronymus gives the story of the pelican restoring its young ones destroyed by serpents as an illustration of the destruction of man by the old Serpent, and his salvation by the blood of Christ. The pelican in Christian art is an emblem of Jesus Christ, by "whose blood we are healed" and it is also a symbol of charity. Many early painters and carvers mistakenly represented it more similar to an eagle (much like in this antique church relic), and not as a natural pelican which is why most people today still are a bit confused at first when this stunning hand carved, symbolic bird is called a pelican.
