About the Item

Wonderfully decorative, intricate and good condition, 19th century box. Over the years we have sold a number of rare and unique boxes, but never a Gothic Revival one with as many bronze images (possibly biblical scenes) as this specimen here. Anyone who knows what it took (in terms of time and skills) to create this box will be just as impressed as we were when we first saw it. It would have taken several artisans to, first, design this piece on paper, then have the sculptures made in wood or clay, then have molds made, then cast them in bronze, then have the castings polished, then have all the individual pieces somehow welded together, then have the lid and the lock plate hinged etc. This antique box is so rare, it will be difficult to ever find out what exactly it was used for, where it was made and whom it was made for. However, in the mid-19th century only churches and the very rich could afford such luxurious and worldly religious gems. It is covered in Gothic details, it tells many a story in relief, it hinges perfectly, it comes with the original lock plate and it stands perfectly strong and stabile. We know the stories that are told in these images all have meaning and anyone interested in the Gothic Style will be able to find out all about the hidden meaning. For us to have found this item again felt like a blessing, for it to be in this very good condition made it even more desirable. Whether this antique sells to a church or to a private collector, put on display, it will look marvelous and it will never fail to impress.
