About the Item
Religious artefact with stunning embossed and inlaid silver plaques.
Antique tabernacles are a rare find, so when we got the chance to purchase this early 20th century example we did not think twice. Especially, because of the stunning and sterling silver religious panels inside the doors and 'roof'. All handcrafted in Europe in the transitional period between the Jugendstil and the Art Deco era, these silver panels represent some of the most stylish and artistic religious art that you will ever come across. Because of the top-quality crafted silver panels and expecting to find makers marks underneath the wooden framework, we decided to carefully take out the Virgin Mary panel. It learned us that this solid silver insert weighs close to 2 pounds, but we found no marks. We decided not to research this religious piece any further, put the silver panel back in place and decided to offer it without knowing who the incredibly skilled designer and metalworker is. The embossed Virgin Mary panel with the Latin text 'AVE GRATIA PLENA' in bas-relief is in excellent condition. So is the stunning silver panel depicting the archangel Gabriel holding the lily flowers. The stylized silver dove with the fully spread wings, representing (the spirit of) Jesus has one dent in the right wing (close to its body), but otherwise it too is in the best possible condition. We have not entirely polished the silver panels so that the depth and the details stand out even more.
The black lacquered, geometric wooden cabinet itself is in the Art Deco style and there is some wear to the surface (as shown in some of our images). Also, the lock has at some point in time been replaced and we have no key to the current lock. This is a two-piece tabernacle and the roof can be taken off. The interior has some staining to the white cloth, but the cloth can easily be replaced and in the middle is the original, copper rod for holding small curtains (see image 3 and 4).
This unique and perfectly handcrafted, religious relic is an absolute joy to own and look at and a real collector's item. An ecclesiastical antique that you find once in your lifetime and great value for money. Also, because perfect packing and worldwide delivery from our store to your door within 4 days are complimentary.

Antique Fine Handcarved Oak Gothic Revival Wall Shrine / Chapel for Statuette
Located in Lisse, NL
Rare and good condition, Gothic-art shrine for standing or wall-hanging.
This handsome and decorative, Gothic wall shrine is completely hand-crafted out of solid oak and it will look awesome, no matter where you decide to mount or place her. It must have taken its creator quite a few days to first draw this intricate design on paper and then hand carve the entire piece out of solid oak. The Gothic Style elements are deeply handcarved in both doors and they make this shrine highly decorative and an absolute joy to own and look at. This cabinet chapel (or chapel cabinet) comes with its brass lock in perfect working order and also with its original gothic style key. The handgrip is in fact a Gothic trefoil symbol (for the trinity). What also makes this piece extra attractive is the Gothic church window-like frame behind the doors. It is among the finest we have seen to date and on top of that this antique also has a beautiful and rich patina. By the way, the bronze Mary statuette is not included in our price. Finally, thanks to the hook in the back, mounting this antique chapel...

Unique Liberty & Co Marked Great Arts & Crafts Cabinet Attr. to Leonard Wyburd
By Leonard Wyburd
Located in Lisse, NL
Stunning Arts and Crafts cupboard by one of the greatest.
We are certain that this wonderful handcrafted, stained oak cabinet was designed by Leonard Francis Wyburd (1865-1958). We are certain, because of several style elements that are typical for his designs for Liberty & Co in the late 19th century. We have no pictures in books or other evidence, but the pieces from his hand that can be found on the internet reveal style elements that are very similar and they were used by no one else. The design of this incredibly artistic piece shows both the influences of Medieval and Rural Britain. It were these early and amazing pieces of furniture from the Liberty Studio (headed by Wyburd) that made people across the continent speak of the 'Stile Liberty'. Designers like Wyburd and pieces of furniture like this amazing cabinet, influenced and shaped the entire development of the Jugendstil and Art Nouveau in Europe. That too makes this rare piece important for collectors and possibly for museums around the world.
This cupboard is a work of art and it is an absolute joy to look at. It is all made of solid and stained oak and apart from the stunning and impressive overal design with the overhanging top with supporting beams, there are some key style elements that make this cabinet really stand out. First of all, there is the ever so true saying which is embossed in copper in beautiful Arts and Crafts letters which reads 'WELCOME IS THE BEST CHEER'. Secondly, there are the rare leather panels in the doors which come with (faded) images in slight reliëf. The one on the left is of a man in a hat and tights and he is playing a mandolin. The leather artwork...

Silver Pax O Portapaz, Spain, 16th Century
Located in Madrid, ES
Portapaz. Silver in its color and gilded. Century XVI.
Portapaz made of silver that has a handle (decorated with delicate plant motifs similar to those of the pilasters) and a female and a male bust at the bottom, as well as other architectural elements on the back, and, on the front, an architectural composition classicist basement (with busts flanking a flower and a cross), two pilasters (vegetal decoration and capital recalling the composite order) with entablature (flowers flanking an angel's head; moldings), and a semicircular arch finish with elements veined in relief under cross and flanked by two architectural motifs in the upper part. This composition frames and enhances a gilt silver relief where you can see the Lament or Cry over the Body of Christ, with the Virgin holding the head of Jesus, Saint John at her side, the Magdalene and other characters, a cross following the group and a landscape background with houses and plant elements. This architectural structure mentioned is similar to the one present in other 16th century portapaces, such as that of the Magdalena de Dos Hermanas parish (Hernando de Ballesteros el Mozo, around 1575); or that of the Galaroza parish (same author and date); or that of the portapaz of San Miguel de Jerez de los Caballeros (in some details); etc. As for the relief, it is possible to clearly see a strong Italian influence, and the similarity between it and important pieces such as the Portapaz known as “de Cisneros by Juan de Burgos (1493-1497; MuseoCatedralicio de Alcalá de Henares), as well as in paintings and reliefs. Also noteworthy are both the male and female busts in the lower area and the Maltese cross (or Saint John's) that appears in this area. This symbol was used since the 12th century as an insignia by the Knights Hospitallers of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, also known as the Order of Malta...
