Betzalel Hand-Made Silver Filigree Spice Box

About the Item

This is a meticulously handcrafted silver filigree spice box, created in the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts tradition, a hallmark of early 20th-century Jewish artistic expression in Jerusalem. The round form is adorned with intricate openwork filigree patterns, showcasing the skill and artistry typical of Bezalel artisans. The lid is crowned with a central floral motif, encircled by elegant swirling filigree designs, forming a symmetrical and ornate pattern. The delicate craftsmanship is further emphasized by the detailed borders and the balanced proportion of the entire piece. At the base, it is signed in Hebrew with “Bezalel Jerusalem,” authenticating its origin as part of the renowned Bezalel art movement, which blended European techniques with Middle Eastern and Jewish artistic traditions. This spice box would have been used in a Jewish home during the Havdalah ceremony, where fragrant spices are smelled to mark the end of Shabbat. The piece is not only functional but also a testament to the cultural and historical significance of Bezalel’s legacy in the Jewish art world. Every item in Menorah Galleries is accompanied by a Lifetime Certificate of Authenticity and additional documentation and information regarding the individual artifact and its culture.
