A Charity Container for the Bnei Akiva Organization , Israel 1950
About the Item
A charity container for the Bnei Akiva organization in Israel from around 1950 reflects the ethos and activities of this prominent religious Zionist youth movement.
Bnei Akiva is a worldwide religious Zionist youth movement founded in 1929 in Mandatory Palestine. It emphasizes Jewish education, religious observance, and a commitment to building and supporting the State of Israel through settlement and communal activities. Charity containers for Bnei Akiva were used to collect donations from members, supporters, and the public to fund various activities and projects. These could include educational programs, youth camps, agricultural settlements (moshavim), and social welfare initiatives aimed at strengthening Jewish identity and religious observance.
This charity container is made of metal, painted in pearlescent blue and cream yellow. chosen for durability. It is formed in the shape of a Decalogue with a slot for inserting donations in between its peaks. It is inscribed with the emblem of Bnei Akiva and below is their address and phone number along with a list of the causes they support in English on one side and Hebrew on the other. On each of its sides is a map of Israel and a shining sun with individual rays extending to the exact numbered locations the organization supports in Hebrew and English.
Bnei Akiva played a pivotal role in shaping the identity and activities of young Jews in Israel and the diaspora. It promoted religious education, Hebrew language proficiency, love for the land of Israel, and active participation in building a Jewish homeland. The 1950s were a period of nation-building and consolidation in Israel, following its establishment in 1948. Bnei Akiva, with its emphasis on Jewish values, Zionist ideology, and communal responsibility, contributed significantly to the social, educational, and cultural fabric of Israeli society.

An Early Charity Container from an Agudath Israel Convention
Located in New York, NY
This unique vintage pushka (charity box) is a rare historical piece from an Agudath Israel convention held in early 20th-century Europe, possibly near Switzerland. The design and inscriptions suggest that it was distributed to attendees as a keepsake and functional charity collection box.
The pushka is made of tin, crafted by the European company Gebr. Hoffman, which began producing tins in 1904 in Thun, Switzerland. The two halves of the box fit together seamlessly, ensuring a secure closure. One side features an embossed design resembling an early 20th-century Swiss coin, with a large "1" encircled by a laurel wreath. Below the number, a narrow slit allows for the insertion of coins, making it a practical donation container.
The reverse side of the tin bears...
