Dutch Brass Menorah, Late 19th Century (1880-1890)

About the Item

This striking brass menorah, crafted in the Netherlands during the late 19th century, exemplifies a blend of artistic craftsmanship and symbolic meaning. Measuring approximately 20 inches in height and 17 inches in width, the menorah features an elaborate design that distinguishes it from more conventional models of the period. The base is composed of three sculpted dolphin figures, a decorative motif commonly found in Dutch and European metalwork of the time, possibly symbolizing water and movement. These stylized dolphins curve outward, forming sturdy supports that elevate the structure, giving it both stability and an ornamental flair. One of the menorah’s most distinctive elements is the way its branches extend from the central stem. Unlike traditional menorahs with plain arms, this piece features curved branches adorned with small, thorn-like protrusions, evoking the image of a growing tree or vine. Each branch supports a candleholder at its peak, with an additional raised central branch to accommodate the shamash. A particularly striking design choice is the use of sculpted hands emerging from the central stem to support the branches. These hands, which appear symmetrically positioned, give the menorah an almost anthropomorphic quality, reinforcing the connection between divine light and human devotion. The hands could also be interpreted as referencing priestly blessings, further emphasizing the religious significance of the piece. This menorah bears a close resemblance to an example housed in the collection of the Jewish Museum in New York (accession number 2847), reflecting a style associated with Dutch Jewish ceremonial art from the late 19th century. Its intricate craftsmanship and symbolic details make it not only a functional ritual object but also a remarkable piece of Judaica with artistic and historical significance.

Early 19th Century Polish Brass Hanukkah Lamp Menorah
Located in New York, NY
Brass Hanukkah lamp Menorah, Poland, circa 1810. Cast in Bench form, on four feet. The backplate is cast and pierced featuring scrollwork. This lamp was made by the technique known as "sand casting". This process begins with a wooden mold that was carved out to create negative space, which in turn is used to make the inverse form or shape to be used for the casting of metal. The mold is pressed into fine sand mixed with clay, then removed, and molten brass poured into the impression. When a mold wears out, a casting from that mold is often used as the mold for the next generation. Those later lamps...

19th Century Iraqi Silver Hanukkah Lamp Menorah
Located in New York, NY
Handcut strips of silver that have been bent into curvilinear shapes, with semicircle of candle-sockets, complete with drip-pans. A cast-made pair of birds, appearing to be ducks or geese, flank the servant light, while at top as the finial, a large casting of a hen or rooster. While this overall form of lamp is known as hailing from Iraq, we cannot locate any other Iraqi lamps featuring the animals displayed on our example. Birds such as peacocks were widely used in Iraqi and other Middle-Eastern and North African Chanukah lamps, however the usage of the animals featured on our lamp likely have more to do with the surrounding Islamic culture than revealing any meaning in Judaism, which is typical overall for many motifs found on Jewish ritual...
