About the Item

Judaica Charity box, made in Austria, circa 1920. Printed with a scene of the Western Wall, inscribed in Hebrew “Land of Israel / Western Wall / Rabbi Meir Ba’al Ha-Nes”. Charity boxes made of tin were issued both in Europe and the United States during the era of World War One often collected for funds relating to religious Jewish institutions in Jerusalem, many of which were named after a Jewish sage who lived close to two thousand years ago, known as “Rabbi Meir the miracle worker”. This box is a rarity among “Rabbi Meir” boxes, as it is not made of the typically found tin, but of wood. It was issued by “Lourie & Co.”, a Jewish-owned firm in Vienna. For another example, see the Steinhardt sale of Judaica at Sotheby’s in 2013, lot 369. Tzedakah is a Hebrew word commonly translated as charity, however the word is more closely connected to the English word justice. Tzedakah refers to a Jewish obligation to contribute to the creation of a just world. It is important to note that tzedakah is not only money, but refers to any act that creates a more just world. Giving tzedakah is so important that is considered one of three acts – along with repentance and prayer – that can save a person from death.
