About the Item
This is a Rag-Dung, also known as a Dungchen or Tibetan long trumpet, a significant wind instrument used in Tibetan Buddhist ceremonies. It was crafted from copper and brass with some decorative stone beads, the Rag-Dung is characterized by its long, telescoping sections, allowing for easier transport.
The Dungchen plays a crucial role in Tibetan Buddhist rituals, including morning and evening prayers, festivals like Monlam Chenmo, and even funeral rites where its deep, resonant sound is believed to guide the deceased's soul. Its deep, continuous drone symbolizes the infinite nature of the universe and the impermanence of life, and the act of playing it is considered a form of meditation, demanding intense concentration and breath control.
Unlike Western brass instruments, the Dungchen does not have valves or keys to alter pitch. It primarily produces deep, resonant drone-like sounds by buzzing the lips into its mouthpiece, creating a powerful and low-pitched wail often compared to the singing of elephants.
This Dungchen can be displayed as a wall decor or even be used as a table top item for your sacred space or the living room.
