About the Item
This charming and historically significant German pewter Passover plate, crafted circa 1810, is a poignant example of early European Judaica created with humble yet heartfelt means. Made entirely of pewter—a more accessible alternative to silver for the modest Jewish communities of 19th-century Europe—this Seder plate reflects both the spiritual devotion and the creative resourcefulness of its makers.
The plate is of broad circular form, with a gently sloping basin that draws the eye inward from a wide, undulating lip. Along the upper rim, boldly engraved in Hebrew, is the entire order of the Seder—“קדש ורחץ כרפס יחץ מגיד רחצה מוציא מצה מרור כורך שלחן עורך צפון ברך הלל נרצה”—meticulously etched around the perimeter in a flowing ring. This inscription is bordered below by a delicate, wave-like scroll pattern that adds movement and rhythm to the edge of the composition.
Beneath this engraved border, the plate gently curves downward, and is adorned with a lively band of engraved foliate motifs—scrolling stems, clustered leaves, and curling tendrils that meander across the metal’s surface with a rustic, handmade charm. These decorative elements lend a sense of abundance and growth, fitting for a plate used during the festival of spring and redemption.
In the lower central area of the bowl are engraved depictions of the three core symbolic foods of the Seder: Pesach (the paschal lamb), Matzah, and Maror (bitter herbs). Each word is inscribed in Hebrew near its accompanying illustration—a small lamb or cattle for Pesach, a flat pierced round for Matzah, and leafy stems representing Maror. These images, though naïvely rendered, are utterly sincere, and are separated by curling vine-like stems that tie the whole composition together visually and thematically.
At the very center of the plate, two finely engraved birds stand upright, their wings outspread and their bodies facing outward. Atop both of their heads rests a shared crown, a motif rich in symbolism—perhaps alluding to divine unity, the Jewish people, or the sanctity of the Passover ritual. Between the birds, finely engraved in Hebrew letters, is the year of creation: תק"ע, or 1810, further rooting this plate in its historical and cultural context.
Altogether, this early 19th-century pewter Seder plate is more than just a ritual object—it is a testament to the enduring spirit of Jewish life in diaspora, crafted with care and reverence by a community that celebrated its traditions not through opulence, but through faith, craftsmanship, and continuity.
