About the Item

An Italian 18th Century Vellum Leaf with Megillah Blessings – Hand-Scribed Liturgical Manuscript This rare and beautifully preserved 18th-century Italian manuscript leaf, meticulously hand-scribed on vellum, contains the traditional blessings recited before and after the public reading of the Megillat Esther on Purim. Executed in a refined Hebrew script with 10–11 rows per column, the blessings are laid out in a clear and legible format, meant for ritual use. During the 18th century, it was not uncommon for these blessings to be included directly at the start of the Megillah scroll itself. However, this particular example—remarkable for its large format and standalone presentation—suggests it may have served a more public liturgical role. Likely originating from a synagogue in Italy, it was possibly used by the cantor (chazzan), rabbi, or official Megillah reader, allowing them to chant the blessings aloud before unrolling and reading from the main scroll. The scribe’s hand demonstrates both technical skill and devotional intent, while the natural tone of the vellum and the aged ink speak to its historical authenticity. The elegant proportions and careful layout reinforce its use as a practical yet dignified tool of communal worship. A fascinating artifact of Italian-Jewish liturgical history, this vellum leaf offers insight into the ritual practices of European synagogue life and remains a poignant testament to centuries of Purim observance and Jewish manuscript tradition.

The backplate is cast and pierced with a central two-handled vase of flowers, flanked by fully formed birds with their heads turned outward. The side panels fitted with two servant lights, fronted by a row of eight oil fonts. Scholars theorize that these Polish Chanukah Lamps that bear two servant lights (as opposed to the singular servant light normally found on a Chanukah Lamp), served a purpose, having been used on one of the days that Chanukah fell on the Sabbath, as Sabbath Candlesticks. For another example, see page 296 of the book “Five Centuries of Hanukkah Lamps...
