About the Item
A finely cast ritual bell (ghanta) from the late Edo period (c. mid-19th century), made of brass with a five-pronged vajra (go-kosho) handle. This sacred implement would have been used in esoteric Buddhist rites, especially within the Shingon or Tendai traditions of Japan.
The bell features concentric horizontal bands around its body and retains a rich, aged patina. The intricately formed vajra atop symbolizes indestructible wisdom and the masculine principle, while the resonating bell below represents the feminine principle and the emptiness of all phenomena. Together, they embody the unity of wisdom and compassion.
