An extraordinary and monumental 13-piece Russian Orthodox matryoshka (nesting doll) set, hand-painted and signed by artist Novikov L.A., dated 2000. This spiritually rich and visually commanding ensemble comprises a total of 40 individual components, including seven large matryoshka dolls, each constructed in four parts, and six smaller two-piece nesting figures—a rare and technically advanced format.
The largest doll measures an impressive 16 inches high by 7.5 inches in diameter, forming an architectural shrine-like outer form. Additional dolls measure 11", 9", 8", 7", 6", 5", 4", and 2.25" high, with the smallest nested figures ranging from 0.75" to 2" high. All dolls open, and none are solid—every piece is a fully articulated two-part construction, with some opening further into nested interior segments.
The outermost matryoshka is uniquely designed with cut-out architectural framing, creating a cathedral-like effect around the central icon of the Theotokos (Virgin and Child). Interior figures include representations of Christ Pantocrator, Saint Nicholas, and other patriarchs and saints of the Russian Orthodox tradition, each painted with glittering halos, ecclesiastical vestments, and finely detailed iconographic features.
The set is signed by the artist (Новиков Л.А.) and dated "РОССИЯ 2000" on the base of the largest figure. Lacquered and richly detailed with gilt and glitter embellishments, this museum-worthy matryoshka set stands as a rare devotional object and masterful example of contemporary Russian folk iconography.
