About the Item

An Olivewood Dreidel made for the Kollel Shomrei HaChomot in Jerusalem Circa 1920. Kollel Shomrei HaChomot is a financial charity institute set up to support the community of Hungarian-Jews who emigrated to the Holy Land. The Hungarian Jews separated themselves in 1858 from its mother institute Kollel Chibas Yerushalayim which at one point in time included the Jewish communities of the entire Austrian Hungarian Kingdom. Kollel Chibas Yerushalayim was itself a breakaway from the original Kolel Perushim, established by the students of the Vilna Gaon. Two leading Hungarian rabbis were appointed as the "Nesyim" or "Presidents of the Kollel, Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Sofer, author of Ketav Sofer, and Meir Eisenstein. This dreidel was one of the items that the Kollel made that were presented to its members and patrons who donated alms to the Kollel. It is made entirely of carved olivewood with a circular top, a square main body, and a flywheel bottom. The letters Nun, Gimmel, Hey, and Shin of the Hebrew alphabet are written on its four sides, and above them is the name of the Kollel and the place where they were located in- Jerusalem
