About the Item

18th Century. Peace depicting the Crucifixion Dark patina bronze, 21 x 14.5 cm The bronze examined is an ancient peace (in Latin osculum pacis or table pacis), the object of the Christian liturgy. It is a tablet decorated on the front with a sacred scene that was kissed by the priest during the celebration of the mass, and then offered to the kiss of the other officiants and finally of the faithful. It, in use since the thirteenth century, replaced the custom of the ancient kiss of peace, which took place before communion, and which today is the "exchange of a sign of peace" with a handshake. The shape is usually rectangular, with a support on the back to keep it resting in a raised position on the altar, but there are also examples of round shape. The materials used were gold, silver, bronze, ivory or glass, as techniques the embossing, the bas-relief, the engraving or enamel, often used in combination in the same specimen. The iconography represented usually addressed liturgical feasts or saints and the theme of the Passion of Jesus, as in the case analyzed here, where the Crucifixion of Christ is represented. In the center of a trefoil space decorated with elegant plant racemes the crucified Christ is represented with his arms stretched forcibly on the cross, his legs crossing on two feet pierced by a single nail, and his head, reclined and suffering, crowned with thorns. . At the foot of the cross, marked by the INRI insignia, initials of the inscription Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, "Jesus Nazarene King of the Jews", the Madonna takes place, suffering wipes her tears with a handkerchief, and the favorite apostle, John , who reaches his hands as a sign of prayer. The artist's skill in defining the figures is striking, in particular in the rendering of the voluminous draperies and the gestures of the characters which are of great naturalness and intensity. The same subject is depicted on the back of the peace from the beginning of the 16th century, in silver chiseled in gold, by a Lombard workshop, kept at the Museum of the Treasure of the Cathedral of Vigevano.

17th century Crucifix Measures: Boxwood, 42 cm high x 8 x 14 The sculpture depicting the crucified Christ examined here represents a refined example of seventeenth-century cabinetry in boxwood. The figure of Christ, now dead on the cross, is part of a precious artistic choreography with the structure of the cross and its pedestal, both decorated with tortoiseshell mirrors, ivory threads to emphasize the structure of the cross and elements in ebonized and carved wood to highlight the architectural structure of the pedestal. The departure of Christ is evident from the lowered head, from the open hands...

19th Century Madonna and Child with Souls in Purgatory Papier-Mache Sculpture
Located in Milan, IT
First half of the 19th century Madonna and Child with souls in Purgatory Lacquered and gilded papier-mache with polychrome wooden base cm 96.5 x 37.5 x 28 "At that time I asked the Lord Jesus: 'For whom do I still have to pray?'. Jesus answered me that the following night he would make me known for whom I had to pray. I saw the Custodian Angel, who ordered me to follow him. At a moment I found myself in a foggy place, invaded by fire and, in it, a huge crowd of suffering souls. These souls pray with great fervour, but without effectiveness for themselves: only we can help them. The flames that burned them, they did not touch me. My Guardian Angel did not abandon me for a moment. And I asked those souls what their greatest torment was. And they unanimously answered me that their greatest torment is the ardent desire of God. I read the Madonna who visited the souls of Purgatory. The souls call Mary 'Star of the Sea'. She brings them refreshment ". (Diary of Sister Faustina Kowalska p. 11) A Polish religious, Saint Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938) reinterpreted in the pages of her testimony the ancient role of the Virgin as savior and supporter of the souls of Purgatory. The Second Vatican Ecumenical Council established that, assumed into Heaven, the Mother of God should operate a continuous intercession in favor of those children waiting for Paradise who were in the place, quoted for the first time by Pope Gregory the Great...

17th century Christ in chains Oil on canvas, 95 x 71 cm Frame 110 x 84 cm The figurative tradition representing Christ with chained hands can be traced back to the early Middle Ages, when an iconography of His pains spread widely. The need to translate the Passion into images aimed to raise awareness of the forgiveness that has occurred for all men, consequent to the Crucifixion. This painting depicts the moment before the audience before Pilate. Christ has not yet been cruelly mocked by the soldiers, despite the fact that he is already wearing the crown of thorns and the purple...

Unique table crucifix and a wonderful work of religious art, dated 1912 and numbered. For us the most powerful statement will always be 'the truth will set you free'. It is what we have learned most from the life of Christ and of His teachings and it is the one thing we always think about whenever we look at a crucifix. Anyone who has tried to break down his/her ego and found a clearer consciousness in the process knows how healing and rewarding that journey can be. After that you can only be grateful for all the good things that are bound to come your way. Good things will come your way, because the universe needs people like you. Whomever created this amazing work of religious art too must have been inspired and motivated by the life of Christ, because how ever could anyone create a piece that is of such quality, so beautiful and so powerful at the same time. Both the beautifully designed bronze cross with the King of the Jews inscription and the amazingly detailed bronze corpus of Christ are of a quality that you will only rarely find on the open market.
