Carved and Gilded Frame in the Baroque Style
Hispanic World 18th-19th Century
This beautiful bust figure of the Virgin Mary is carved in relief on live plaster, painted in oil, and polychromed with rays and stars.
At its base, the following inscription can be read: "AVE MARIA SIN PECADO CONCEBIDA" (Hail Mary, Conceived Without Sin), surrounded by frames that simulate precious stones, within another frame in carved wood with a crest in the Baroque style.
The manufacture of this piece is very rare for America considered out of the ordinary. Marian devotion in the Viceroyalty became established as one of the most venerated cults up to the present day.
