Russian 14kt Gold Tablet Amulet, Diamond and Black Stone, early 20th Century

About the Item

This remarkable double-sided amulet, crafted from 14kt yellow gold, stands as a masterwork of Russian goldsmithing from the early 20th century. The amulet’s tablet-shaped body is hollow, encasing a striking black stone at its core. The front face is adorned with a central Star of David, embellished with seven bezel-set diamonds, each stone meticulously placed to catch and reflect light with a captivating brilliance. Surrounding the star, a series of ten additional bezel-set diamonds form intricate floral swags, enhancing the piece’s elegance and symbolic depth. At the heart of the star, the initials "אי" are embossed in Hebrew, potentially representing either the initials of the original owner or a sacred reference to the Holy Land. At the top of the amulet, a large rectangular-shaped loop allows for secure attachment to a chain. This loop is decorated with a single diamond and finely detailed with geometric and floral designs, echoing the artistry of the main body. The reverse panel is equally impressive, with a beautifully pierced section bearing a portion of the Birkat Kohanim (Priestly Benediction), a sacred blessing thought to offer divine protection. Below this inscription, a pierced foliate motif and a Star of David further enhance the spiritual significance of the piece. The back of the rectangular loop bears a clear "585" hallmark, indicating 14kt purity, alongside a Russian hallmark and an unidentified maker’s mark in Cyrillic, underscoring the amulet’s origin and craftsmanship. This exquisite piece, with its blend of spiritual symbolism, fine craftsmanship, and historical intrigue, captures the essence of early Russian Judaica, making it a rare and highly collectible artifact. The total weight is 12.4 dwt (gross), including the encased stone.
