About the Item

“Saint Dominic and Saint Francis”. Polychromed terracotta. Colonial (South America) school, 18th century. It is narrated in this piece, with a remarkable economy of elements (which shows the quality of the work), the so-called "Brotherly Encounter of Santo Domingo and San Francisco", also called "Embrace of Peace" or, more colloquially and in some circles, "The Bump". According to tradition, Saint Dominic had a vision in which Mary implored Jesus for Men, pointing to both as servants of God; The next day, Santo Domingo met San Francisco in the church of Rome, recognizing him as his companion and hugging and kissing. The present piece still shows influence of the Baroque, but it already points out a certain neoclassical influence in some details, maintaining the peculiarities of its school. Compare, for example, with the "Abrazo" of the Monastery of Santo Tomás de Ávila by Luis Salvador Carmona, dated in the 18th century. Likewise, it is necessary to highlight the quality of the modeling and the polychrome of the piece, with a remarkable state of preservation for the antiquity and delicacy of the material of the figure. Measures: 14x 16 x 26 cms.
