Saint Paul, Carved and Polychromed Wood. Spanish School, 16th Century

About the Item

Spanish school of the sixteenth century. "Saint Paul". Carved and polychrome wood. Devotional image of a round piece carved in wood, polychrome and gilded, representing the Apostle Paul, dressed in a tunic and cloak, with a split beard, brown hair and a large sword, his main iconographic attribute. In the Middle Ages numerous corporations were placed under their patronage, due to different aspects of their iconography, life and miracles. Nevertheless, Saint Paul was never a popular saint, which proves the relative poverty of his iconography. In fact, the role it occupies in art is not proportionate to its importance in the spread of Christianity. In primitive Christian art only has as attributes a book or a scroll, and in the thirteenth century appears its emblem, the sword that was the instrument of his martyrdom. Once overcome the clash between tradition and modernity, the arrival of the influences of the Italian Renaissance in Spain, the full sixteenth century will be characterized by the great development reached by religious imagery. Also, stylistically there will be a confrontation between the sculptors that classicists and those of Flemish affiliation, who sought more dramatic and emotional approaches. In this way, the diffusion of religious image in Spain was based on two fundamental bases. On the one hand, the fact that the Nordic influence constitutes a clearly differentiated alternative with respect to the Italian classicist model; on the other, that the emotional sense, which by its own function has to acquire the religious image, will be oriented more to enhance the feeling, to move the faithful, than to follow the rationalist dictates of the Renaissance. So much so, that in Spain the attention to the emotional had a more relevant character than in the rest of Europe. In this way the image, associated with the word of the preachers, was the most suitable instrument for the indoctrination of the people and for the defense of the canons of the Church, following scholastic and not humanistic approaches" · Size: 19x12x39 cms. Saint on a bed. Polychromed wood. Flemish school, 16th century.
Located in Madrid, ES
Dream of a saint. Carved and polychrome wood. Flemish school, 16th century. Relief made of carved and polychrome wood that shows an old man with a particular headdress (reminiscent of some chaperones) lying on a bed and accompanied by two friars dressed in habits, who talk to each other. Iconographically, the figure of the old man lying on the bed (note the cushion that raises the upper part of the body, following the common use of the time) who has not died (probably) because he was not completely lying down, is reminiscent of how he was usually represented, for example, to San Antón, San Jerónimo, etc. It is not very likely that it is the subject of the Transit or Death of Saint Francis of Assisi due to the absence of the Stigmata and due to age. It would be part of a cycle of scenes in the altarpiece of a church, an accompaniment that would give the viewer more clues about the identity of those represented. Stylistically, Flemish sculpture...
