About the Item

Rare crucifix and a wonderful Art Deco work of religious art. Made and marked by Brom, Utrecht. Brom of Utrecht was a family (or dynasty) of goldsmiths in the Dutch city of Utrecht and they were known for creating some of the best ecclesiastical art that was available in the second half of the 19th and in the first half of the 20th century (from 1856 to 1961 to be exact). They were both designers and manufacturers and, as it goes with truly good makers, they also attracted the interest of other top designers from that era. Those other top designers needed a company to handcraft their top quality designs and Brom of Utrecht was one of the 'go-to' companies for many decades. One of those designers was Steph Uiterwaal and we attribute this Brom-made crucifix to him. It will be very difficult to ever find a more beautifully designed and geometrically more pure and perfect, Art Deco Christ sculpture. Even though it is small, this truly is a stunning and impressive work of religious art that will never fail to impress you or anyone visiting. This Christian work of art dates from the 1920s. Although over the centuries wall crucifixes have been made in all kinds of shapes and sizes, the ones from the Art Deco era seem to be the most distinctive in style. And this small, pure Art Deco crucifix certainly is no exception. The straight lined and geometrical details in this Christ sculpture are among the best we have seen. Thanks to the marvelous coromandel cross with its stylish, dark patina, the pure Art Deco bronze corpus of Christ stands out even more, which makes this piece very clear to see from a larger distance as well. Art Decò Hand Carved Wooden Crucifix with Stunning Bronze Corpus of Christ

Crucifix from the mid-1800s with a carved shroud or veil depicting Christ in the base. This unique and remarkable antique crucifix can both be used as a table and as a wall crucifix. Over the decades we have sold a number of unique and very well crafted crucifixes, but never one in the Art Decò style with this combination of materials and techniques. The overall design and size is what stands out first, but the details and the materials are what make this antique work of religious art extraordinary. The relatively large base of this unique crucifix is a work of religious art in its own right. It is almost as if the cross is growing from this beautiful base and the cross itself too comes with a number of superbly inlays details. With their symbolic meaning of birth and resurrection it is obvious why the artist / sculptor so tastefully incorporated them here. Apart from a minor 'lean' to the left, the cross itself too is in excellent condition. If one were to speak of a trinity in this crucifix then the unique base and cross are completed with an equally striking, solid bronze corpus of Christ...
