This pair of primitive 18th-century Polish brass candle holders originates from the Jewish shtetls of Eastern Europe, where they were used for Sabbath and holiday observances. Crafted with a practical three-part design, they can be easily dismantled for cleaning, allowing the removal of accumulated wax. Their construction features a sturdy square base with four small feet, elevating the holders slightly above the surface. A rounded pedestal supports the central stem, which is adorned with finely turned details and subtle ridges that enhance grip and aesthetic appeal. A distinctive feature of these candle holders is the perforated drip plate with scalloped edges, encircling the stem. This lamp was made by the technique known as "sand casting". This process begins with a wooden mold that was carved out to create negative space, which in turn is used to make the inverse form or shape to be used for the casting of metal. The mold is pressed into fine sand mixed with clay, then removed, and molten brass poured into the impression.
