A United Charity Institution of Jerusalem Charity Box by Alfred Salzman, 1920

About the Item

A charity container designed by Alfred Salzman for the United Charity Institution of Jerusalem in 1920 is an intriguing artifact, reflecting the historical, cultural, and charitable contributions of the community of that time. The United Charity Institution of Jerusalem coordinated efforts to support various charitable activities, such as helping the poor, funding education, and maintaining communal services. Alfred Salzman was a renowned Jewish artist and craftsman who worked in Jerusalem during the early 20th century. His contributions to Judaic charity containers reflected his dedication to preserving Jewish cultural heritage. This charity container is made of metal and tin featuring a secure lid with a slot for donations at the top and is painted yellow and black. At the front, the name of the organization and the causes they funded are written in Hebrew with two pictures below of different neighborhoods in Jerusalem symbolizing the support they provided for the folks in need in these communities. Printed on each side is the name of the organization in English and Yiddish informing the contributors where their donations were being made and their office location. At the top is an original wire seal designed to secure the funds within. The name of the artist is signed on the back included with the words "Printed in Palestine" as Israel was known at the time. Jerusalem in 1920 was under the British Mandate, following the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire after World War I. The city was experiencing significant changes, including the influx of Jewish immigrants and the development of new institutions and infrastructure. This charity box serves as a reminder of efforts to provide compassionate care and support community welfare within Jewish society.
