Zelig Segal’s Modernist Aluminum Hanukkah Lamp

About the Item

This striking Hanukkah lamp, crafted by the renowned Israeli artist Zelig Segal, exemplifies a fusion of tradition and modernist design. Made from aluminum, the lamp features a minimalist, geometric interpretation of the classic menorah, with a sleek, linear form and precision-etched semi-circular patterns that evoke the symbolic branches of the ancient Temple Menorah. Segal, known for his innovative approach to Judaica, seamlessly blends functionality with artistic abstraction, creating a piece that is both a ritual object and a contemporary sculpture. The lamp bears the artist’s signature, underscoring its authenticity and craftsmanship, making it a significant addition to any collection of Jewish ceremonial art. Zelig Segal was born in Jerusalem in 1933 and grew up in the Beit Yisrael neighborhood. His mother was the midwife of the settlement in Hebron and his father was a teacher in the "Etz Chaim" Talmud Torah in the Mazkeret Moshe neighborhood. In 1949 he began studying at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, and had a workshop in the Hutzot Hayotzer arts and crafts complex. The main works of Segal were in the field of design. His works utilized the inventive language of modernist design and minimalist art within the framework of modern Judaica.

The backplate is cast and pierced with a central two-handled vase of flowers, flanked by fully formed birds with their heads turned outward. The side panels fitted with two servant lights, fronted by a row of eight oil fonts. Scholars theorize that these Polish Chanukah Lamps that bear two servant lights (as opposed to the singular servant light normally found on a Chanukah Lamp), served a purpose, having been used on one of the days that Chanukah fell on the Sabbath, as Sabbath Candlesticks. For another example, see page 296 of the book “Five Centuries of Hanukkah Lamps...
