About the Item
This beautiful decimal scale works on the principal of a ratio of 10:1. First developed in the late 1800's, they were used to facilitate the weighing of heavier items, without the need for heavy counter weights. They were made in many different sizes, with the larger ones being used in farms and factories. This particular example would have been used in a grocery store / épicerie for weighing items such as sacks of potatoes or apples, where, for example, 10kg's of produce would only require a 1kg weight, to balance it out. Made in the late 1800's, this beautiful example is complete and in amazingly good condition, considering its age. It still has its original "LACROIX.CAEN" manufacturers badge and its original counter balance tray, which are usually the first pieces to go missing. The wooden frame shows incredible age and patination, but does have degradation, aging, some small age related cracks and splits to the wood, which do not affect the structure of the piece. The ironwork has also aged beautifully, with a wonderful patina and texture, relevant to its age and use. It is a genuine antique item which has seen a lifetime of use and whilst it does function, is naturally not calibrated and is being sold as a decorative, historical, piece.
