It is a barometer made of mahogany wood was the most commonly used type of barometer until the appearance of the aneroid barometer. The back compartment internally houses the glass siphon barometric tube. A small iron or glass weight, placed on the mercury level in the short part of the siphon, rises and falls with the liquid level itself. A wire connects the weight to the pulley and is held taut by a counterweight. Two hands are attached to the center of the pulley: one moves across the dial as atmospheric pressure changes; the other made of brass from lost-wax casting depicting a twisted snake with a lancet in its mouth, allows pressure changes to be read via an acorn-shaped adjustment screw located at the bottom of the barometer. Seven weather conditions are indicated on the white opaline dial.
Pierre Marcel Augustin Chevallier (1797-1841) began an optical business in about 1835 on the rue de la Bourse in Paris. After his death, his business was purchased by Pierre Louis Amédée Queslin, (1819-1883). He and his successors called their store "Maison de Chevallier"; they described themselves as "Chevallier's only successors" and often signed their instruments "Maison Chevallier L'Ingr Queslin."
