Civil War Era Brass Bodied Bloodletting Fleam

About the Item

American Civil War Era brass bodied bloodletting fleam, phlebetome or scarificator. The fleam, which has many other spellings such as phleam, flew or fleame, is a very distinct surgical gadget that is a handheld venipuncture device when bloodletting was seen as a beneficial procedure on a sick bed or battlefield in the mid to late 19th Century. That small, but sharp blade punctures the vein and lets out the "bad" blood. This piece comes in a small leather clad wood box that has a good deal of its leather exterior missing due to age and use. The sliding removable brass plate is stamped F.D. Possibly the maker or the piece or the owner's initials. The box measures approximately 2.5" x 1.25" x .75" high. The actual tool measures approximately 2" in length. Good overall condition with some tarnish and wear consistent with age.
