About the Item

An odd decorative item, by repute the shoe of Russian Giant Feodor Machnow. The shoe is of leather construction, maroon in color, with a brass buckle. Leather sole and heal, the shoe has been well worn due to the consistence wear especially on the central section of the sole. The shoe has its original softwood last. The shoe is accompanied with a German photocard, with hand written pencil. Scribbled in the top left I assume in German and illegible to myself is Orl.......??, in the bottom right reads "2m 68cm 27.......?? the man in question was born 1879 in what is today Belarus, 7ft 10in tall Machnow was forced to perform across the world for money despite him often trying to escape to return to his wife and children. In 1905 he toured the UK where he joined the Hippodrome circus, he then toured the United States in 1906 where he met President Roosevelt as well as actor and fellow giant George Auger. Throughout his tour his promoters exaggerated his height, and he was usually accredited with a considerably inflated stature as high as 9 feet 3 inches (282 cm) and billed as "The Russian Giant." Machnow died in 1913 due to pneumonia and likely complications of Acromegaly although there are other versions of the story. Some believed he had been poisoned by rivals or envious competitors (Machnow was a rather well known wrestler), but no evidence for this is available. He was the father of four children none of whom reached a height greater than two meters The shoe measures 43cm in length 15.5cm in depth, 17.5cm in height via the barleycorn system (that is still used today for the UK and North America markets) the shoe would be a size 26.
