About the Item

KALEIDOSCOPE GADGET CANE Probably English, circa late 19th century 37 1/2" L x 5 1/2" W (handle) A curiosity cane fitted with a kaleidoscope handle, the spherical head incorporating a viewing tube and lens with multicolored fragments enclosed beneath a brass bezel. The opposite end is fitted with a peephole lens, allowing the user to peer through and rotate the cane to activate the kaleidoscopic effect. The head is mounted with a brass motif featuring heraldic cross within a laurel wreath. The shaft is of tapering oak. Canes of this type belong to the category of gadget canes or system canes that were fashionable in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These novelty walking sticks often incorporated hidden mechanisms or amusements that were largely intended to entertain, as opposed to the more functional category of gadget canes that offered their users some clever device for their daily activities. Kaleidoscope canes in particular are relatively rare, appealing to the Victorian fascination with optical play, scientific wonder, and portable amusements. Condition: Handle with light wear and patina to wood and brass. Kaleidoscope is functional, the glass bezel with a crack in it, the interior with some dusting and cloudiness to glass.
