About the Item

A gorgeous French 19th century painted and gold gilt barometer with thermometer. The elegantly carved giltwood surrounding the French gray-painted case is in a rococo and laurel leaf theme–a lovely contrast to the intention as a scientific instrument. One can observe “centigrade” still legible on the thermometer at the top, with markings for the degrees up to forty-five celsius. Set within a moulded giltwood bezel is the circular dial painted with common words to describe the weather conditions, from very dry to wet (raining) indicated by a calibrated hand. Although it no longer works for taking measurements, it’s a glorious decorative piece. Make sure to view the detailed images to get a closer look at the fine details.
