Georgian Travelling Field Surgeons Box

Fully Equipped Field Surgeons Box From our Boxes collection, we are delighted to offer this Antique Travelling Field Surgeons Box. The Surgeons Box made from Mahogany with brass banded strapping vertically around the exterior with a shield shaped vacant initial plaque and matching escutcheon. The interior of the box is lined in a deep purple/red felt and contains the original partitioned field surgeons equipment including bone saws, tweezers, hooks and knives. The rear of the box is marked with the manufacturer’s label for Ferris and Co, Bristol The Field Surgeon’s box dates to the first half of the 19th century during the early Victorian period circa 1840. The Surgeons box comes complete with working lock and tasseled key. Measurements (inches) 1.8 x 9.65 x 2.95 Ferris & Company (Limited) formerly of Union Street, Bristol were established by Dr Till-Adam in circa 1770 and operated through to the very early 20th century. Mahogany the name given to many types of tropical hardwood and can be found in Africa, India and South America, most of which are a red-brown colour with a fine, even grain. This makes it easily workable and gives it a durable finish which attributes to its popularity with many kinds of furniture. Victorian an era of British History corresponding approximately with the reign of Queen Victoria from the 20th of June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901 however, there are arguments stating that the Victorian era is actually from 1820 until 1914 proceeded by Georgian era and followed by the Edwardian era.
