About the Item

A rare and visually commanding late 19th-century brass balance scale, attributed to J. Motk & Co., circa 1890. Likely of Portuguese or Central European origin, this exquisite scale would have served in a traditional butcher’s shop or general market setting. Its unique dual-tier design includes four finely suspended weighing pans—two smaller upper trays and two substantial lower basins—each supported by intricately forged brass chains. The central column bears a stamped maker’s inscription, enhancing the scale’s collectible value. Topped with a stylized ox-head finial, the piece speaks to its probable function in the meat trade and serves as a symbolic and decorative centerpiece. Crafted with a balance of industrial strength and sculptural artistry, this scale would make a stunning addition to any interior, be it retail, hospitality, or private collection, particularly those inspired by scientific, culinary, or industrial themes. Dimensions: • Height: approx. 164 cm (64.6 inches) • Width: approx. 74 cm (29.1 inches) • Depth: approx. 38 cm (15 inches) Condition: The scale is in good antique condition, with original patina and signs of gentle age-related wear.
