Late Medieval Marble Apothecary Mortar

About the Item

Marble apothecary mortar. with four lugs having being worked into horses heads. Most likely for private apothecary use Excellent patination. Marble Circa 14th/15th Century, with later carving, Italy. Most likely the horse heads are a depiction of Bucephalus, the horse of Alexander the Great and arguably the most famous horse from the Ancient world. Bucephalus carried Alexander in all his major battles. And according to 1st Century Historian Plutarch the moment they met changed the flow of history. Hard to argue, with Alexander becoming the greatest conqueror of antiquity.
