About the Item
Louis XVI Giltwood Barometer-Thermometer, French, late 18th Century, made by Duvaldestin in Dijon, France
Elegantly carved from limewood and water-gilt in burnished and matte gold, this octagonal wall barometer is surmounted by a lyre-shaped crest containing a mercury thermometer backed by laurel branches and crowned by an Apollo sunburst mask. The silvered dial—lettered Baromètre with weather indications from Tempête through Très-Sec—pivots beneath a finely engraved 32-point compass rose and twin steel pointers. A delicate inner moulding and beaded outer border frame the glass, while incised stars accent each corner of the octagon. The mercury tube and hand-cut glass are intact; the gilt surface shows only minor burnish wear consistent with more than two centuries of careful indoor display. Dimensions: 34 in H × 18 in W × 2 in D (≈ 86 × 46 × 5 cm). A handsome, fully period example that marries scientific instrument with Louis XVI decorative refinement.
