Louis XVI Period Giltwood Barometer

About the Item

This beautifully carved Louis XVI barometer follows the designs of Evangelista Torricelli, an Italian physicist who was a student of Galileo and who is credited with inventing the first barometer. Acquired from a chateau in the Dordogne valley in France, where it likely spent its entire existence, this piece remains in its original condition and presents a beautiful light green patina surrounded by golden frame with wreathed trophy at the top. The original thermometer still functions, however the mercury tube on the back is may need adjusting to be returned to fully functioning condition.
