19th C Hand Painted Entomology Studies Gothic Revival Shadow Box Taxidermy Curio

About the Item

A collection of finely painted entomology studies, on card later mounted and set within a fantastic velvet lined, glazed period gothic revival shadow box. The shadow box has its original ebonised finish, with water gilt internal slip. Each study has been secured within the case via four brass pins. Age related staining to the mid 19th century studies, the odd very minor knock and abrasion to the shadow box. 48/44/4cm

A Gothic Revival reliquary. Circa late 19th / early 20th century. Made of solid oak with fine carving. Reliquaries have been used to store relics since the Middle Ages. In sacred architecture they are often located behind the main altar in the chancel. In addition to classical, often church-like caskets, anthropomorphic, so-called "speaking" reliquaries were also made, which already inform the viewer about their contents through their own design.
