About the Item

1929 Art Deco Evans Case Company Black Enamel Dual Cigarette Case & Lighter, Cecil Lawrence This rare 1929 Art Deco cigarette case and lighter combination by the renowned Evans Case Company exemplifies the sleek innovation and modern glamour of the Jazz Age. Designed by Cecil Lawrence, the piece showcases the forward-looking elegance that defined the era’s most luxurious accessories. The exterior is a striking study in geometric Art Deco design, with undulating triangular motifs at the top and bottom accented by a contrasting reeded polished metal banding. The reverse is equally refined, featuring a tactile textured grid of horizontal and vertical lines that catch the light and provide a sophisticated hand-feel. The case opens by pressing two side clasps, releasing a spring-loaded door that reveals a well-preserved interior with the original Evans spring-arm mechanism for holding cigarettes. Cleverly integrated into the design is a built-in lighter, refillable through a cap marked “Evans, Clipper, U.S.A.” The upper interior is crisply stamped “Evans, Pat 80179, Other Pat Pending.” The Evans Case Company, founded in Attleboro, Massachusetts in the early 20th century, quickly became America’s preeminent maker of fine compacts, cigarette cases, lighters, and vanity accessories. Evans was especially admired for merging advanced engineering with Art Deco style, producing accessories that were both functional and highly fashionable. The cigarette case/lighter combination was a particularly popular innovation of the late 1920s and 1930s, symbolizing modernity, sophistication, and the liberated glamour of the Jazz Age. Designer Cecil Lawrence was known for patenting inventive mechanisms and creating streamlined, stylish forms that perfectly captured the aesthetics of the period. His designs for Evans remain some of the most sought-after examples of Art Deco metalwork, often commanding attention from collectors worldwide for their ingenious integration of function and design. This example, produced in 1929, stands out not only for its handsome black enamel surfaces accented with polished chrome but also for its rarity in today’s market. While many Evans pieces survive, dual-function cigarette cases with lighters, especially those attributed to Cecil Lawrence, are considerably less common and highly collectible. Condition: Lovely vintage condition overall. Light surface wear and minor enamel losses to the case consistent with age. Minor discoloration to metal on the back and interior. The springs, clasps, and lighter mechanism function normally, with no issues. A remarkable survival from the golden age of Art Deco design, blending utility and beauty with enduring style.
