About the Item

From our collectables, we are delighted to offer this Georgian Treen Dog Snuff Box. The Treen Snuff Box beautifully formed in the shape of a naive dog lying recumbent with its head on the ground and tail laid underneath the dog. The dog is fitted with its original carved collar which has been left unstained. The box with visible patination and wear from years of handling leaving it in a beautiful golden brown colour. The Treen snuff box dates to the Georgian period during the reign of George III circa 1790. Snuffboxes were used for containing snuff which is a mixture of ground tobacco and scented oils. Originally from the Americas Snuff became extremely popular in 18th century Europe, it was seen as a status symbol and undertaken by the elite in society. Commissioned snuff boxes of various materials would be bought by high status individuals as a sign of wealth and power. Snuff boxes became highly prized by collectors from 19th century when snuff was slowly phased out. Georgian, a period in British history dating from 1714-1837, the Georgian era after the Hanoverian kings George I, George II, George III and George IV. Treen as a word is derived from the old English word treowen, meaning “of the tree” or to put it in more simple terms, wooden. In the antiques trade it is the collective name used to describe handmade functional items which are made predominantly from wood.
