Japanese Meiji Period Gosho Ningyô of the First Emperor, Jimmu, Ca. 190

About the Item

Japanese Meiji Period Gosho Ningyô of Jimmu, the First Emperor of Japan, Ca. 1900 DIMENSIONS: Height: 8.5 inches Width: 9.5 inches Depth: 5.5 inches ABOUT This is an exceptional Gosho Ningyô representing Emperor Jimmu, the legendary first emperor of Japan. Created during the Meiji period (1868–1912), this exquisitely preserved palace doll is in remarkably bright and pristine condition. According to tradition, Emperor Jimmu ascended the throne in 660 BCE and is regarded as the mythical founding ancestor of Japan’s imperial line. Gosho Ningyô, or “palace dolls,” were originally bestowed by the Imperial Court as gifts to nobility. Characterized by their rounded forms, white complexions, and elaborate attire, these dolls embody refined courtly elegance and exceptional craftsmanship. This particular example reflects the highest quality in every detail. The figure’s face is delicately sculpted with a serene and dignified expression. He wears sumptuous silk brocades, carefully applied to a carved kimekomi (wooden) body. He holds a bow in hand, with a quiver of arrows on his back and a sword at his side. The doll is presented on its original lacquered display stand. A superb fusion of artistry, tradition, and historical symbolism, this Meiji-period Gosho Ningyô is both a striking decorative piece and a culturally significant representation of Japan’s imperial heritage.
