Japanese Takeda Ningyo of an Actor Playing a Warrior at Sea

About the Item

Japanese Takeda Ningyo depicting an actor from a Kabuki play in a role of a warrior at the sea with his anchor design embroidered on the sleeve and the stage prop waves in the foreground. The costume made of chirimen silk, birodo velvet and kinran brocades. He stands in an exaggerated position with his left foot elevated on a tree stump and his left foot outstretched with his big toe slightly raised. He holds a bow and a fan. There are two swords at his hip. The head is carved of wood covered in gofun with painted features in the mie expression. He had a top knot and inset hair. He stands on his own Takeda-style black lacquered stage box base with inset embroidered panel. Minor signs of wear otherwise excellent condition. Measuring overall 15 in. high x 8-1/2 in. deep x 12 in. wide. The doll from toe to head measures 12 in. high. 1 lb. 15 oz. Edo period, circa 1840.
