About the Item

Rare American pull toy made in 1890 by the Ive's Corporation entitled "Old Woman in The Shoe", based on the English nursery rhyme whose genesis dates back to 1794. The shoe and wheels are cast iron, the dolls are bisque, and the "old woman" is in her all original clothes with all original paint to her face. The bisque children's figures are definitely period and could be original but I am not entirely certain since I have only seen the toy two other times; once with a couple of bisque figures and once with a couple of china head dolls. Both times incomplete. China head dolls were glossy and date from 1830's to 1940. Bisque or Parian dolls had a matte finish and date from 1860 to 1900 (parian is actually a little earlier). Both styles would have been period but it seems to me that a matte or bisque/parian finish would be more congruous to the toy, to better complement the hand painted face of the "old lady". Obviously, the little porcelain children came out easily or/and were played with by their owner. In both examples I have seen in the past, I was not aware of arms because the clothing overlapped where arms would be. On my example, the left arm is present, but the right arm is lacking. The black paint to the shoe and to the original wheels is completely original with no touch-up or repaint. The red ribbon is not old. I purchased the bank from an estate in Portland, Oregon some time ago, and it has resided in my own collection ever since. The Ive's company was located in Bridgeport, Connecticut and in business from 1868 until 1932, when they fell victim to the depression and claimed bankruptcy. This very rare and highly sought after toy was manufactured only a few years after, and perhaps inspired by the super rare mechanical bank of the same name made by W.S. Reed Company in Leominster, Massachusetts----about 125 miles away.. The toy is 9" long x 6 3/8" high x 3 1/4" wide.

Fine Quality Antique French Toy "Dancing Couple", circa 1880, Rare

Located in Incline Village, NV

One of a kind, fine quality antique toy, "Dancing Couples" is of French manufacture, it is marked in raised lettering "A.L. Paris" at the top of the base. It is also very similar to several French toys noted in "Antique Toys" by Jeffrey Levitt, and the young lady's face is almost identical to the bisque face on a French toy referenced on page 209 plate #372. This outstanding toy consists of two figures, a young man resembling Napoleon Bonaparte, and a young lady, dressed in period clothes with bisque (porcelain) faces and heads and wooden legs. The base is some type of metal composite consisting of a cast lead alloy. The polychromed hand painted blue and red metal dance floor is also a lead alloy. The wire stands supporting the figures is of ferrous metal. The bisque faces are very lifelike with flesh tones and blue eyes, rosy cheeks to the lady with bisque auburn hair.
