About the Item

Rare and charming set of wooden dolls by Kay Bojensen from his own workshop. The dolls were designed in the 1930s and was named Lise (female) and Ole (male) as these were the most common names for girls and boys in Denmark at the time. Both dolls were handmade and painted in Bojesens own workshop in Copenhagen. The legs are rigid, there are no joins in the elbows, knees or ankles but the arms are pivoted at the shoulders. This pair was probably made in the 1940-50s and are in amazing original condition. No longer in production. Despite being developed in the 1930s, the design of these small wooden doll are timeless. They represents the best of classic Danish design through its clean and simple lines, minimalist decoration and bold colours. Bojesen went on to design other wooden figures, animals, trains, cars, and a farm. This occurred at a time when other toy manufacturers had moved away from wood decades before and were working in tin and developing injection moulding techniques and new plastics. Bojesen was said to have been an inspiration to other major Danish designers including Piet Hein, Magnus Steffensen and Ole Wansher. His designs became very popular in the 1950s and 1960s and were extensively copied around the world. They were well liked by kindergarten teachers, parents and children for their durability and the way they encouraged creativity and imagination.
