About the Item
Antique early 20th Century French Art Deco bronze and marble book ends, realistically cast as two vulture birds mounted on polished marble bases. These book ends are unsigned and attributable to Max Le Verrier.
Max Le Verrier was a renowned French sculptor and decorative artist, particularly celebrated for his exquisite bronze bookends and Art Deco sculptures. Born on January 29, 1891, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Le Verrier honed his artistic skills at the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva before serving in World War I. After the war, he established his studio in Paris, where he became a pivotal figure in the Art Deco movement. His works, often characterised by their elegant forms and detailed craftsmanship, included a variety of subjects ranging from graceful female figures to dynamic animal forms. Le Verrier's bookends are especially prized for their aesthetic appeal and functionality, embodying the sleek, geometric lines and stylised forms that define the Art Deco era. His legacy endures through the timeless beauty and artistic innovation of his creations, which continue to be sought after by collectors and art enthusiasts worldwide.

Max Le Verrier
Max Le Verrier was born on January 29, 1891, in Neuilly-sur-Seine. He opened his studio in 1919 and won a medal at the famed 1925 Exposition in Paris that gave Art Deco its name. Later, he established a foundry that cast bronze sculptures for Pierre Le Faguays and Marcel Bourain, among others. Although Le Verrier experimented with other alloys, he continued to create pieces in bronze as well. Le Verrier died on June 6, 1973, in Paris.
