About the Item

Pair 19th century French Bronze Louis XVI style andirons were cast in the Classic manner revived during the reign of King Louis XVI to return the court to a manner consistent with the timeless ancient Greek & Roman architectures of centuries past. The symbolism includes the torchere, signifying the light that is shed upon the monarchy, the archer's bow which represents its power, and the eternal flame indicating the monarch's desire for immortality. Set upon pierced railing and lions' paw feet, they were originally designed to enhance a small wood- or coal-burning fireplace, the pair is ideal as decorative accents for virtually any purpose or décor, circa 1880s Each measures 8 H x 9 W x 16 D.

Pair of French Louis XVI Style Silvered Bronze Chenets, circa 1900
Located in Dallas, TX
This pair of brightly silvered bronze chenets are from France (circa 1900), in the style of Louis XVI, as noted by the presence of laurel leaf festoons and pots au feu finials. They were used in well-appointed homes, not only to decorate the front of the fireplace, but to prevent burning logs from rolling onto priceless rugs, should they break free of the fire. Often seen in natural wrought iron, or gilded in gold (in finer homes), it is unusual to see them in silvered bronze. Each finial has two pots au feu of different sizes and orientation adorned with a laurel swag. The larger fire pot...
