About the Item

Pair of Art Deco bronze and marble goat-shaped bookends Continental Bronze, marble Early 20th Century / c. 1930 Dimensions: H x W x D: 14cm x 16cm x 9cm This superb pair of bookends was crafted in the early 20th century, during the height of the Art Deco movement. Characterised by bold geometric forms, streamlined figures, and a modern aesthetic, the style reflected the era’s fascination with glamour, luxury, and technological progress. These bookends draw inspiration from works by renowned Art Deco artists such as Demetre Chiparus (Romanian, 1886–1947) and Paul Silvestre (French, 1884–1976). Each bookend is expertly cast in bronze and depicts a leaping goat - a popular motif in Art Deco sculpture. The animals are shown with heads lowered and front legs raised, charging forward with dynamic energy. Their stylised bodies serve as both decorative elements and functional supports, embodying the Art Deco balance of form and utility. The finely rendered anatomical features, including defined muscles and textured fur, lend the figures a sense of realism while embracing the sleek, elegant lines typical of the period. The goats are mounted on striking red and white marble bases, their rectangular shape echoing the geometric design language of the era. Of superb quality, this antique pair is a desirable addition for collectors of Art Deco or anyone seeking a stylish historical accent for their home.
