Pair of Art Deco Republic Chinese Carved Pale Jade Stone & Brass Bookends
About the Item
Pair of Chinese Export Carved Jade and Brass Bookends, Republic Period, circa 1920s
Description:
A finely crafted pair of Chinese export bookends featuring pierced and carved jade (or hardstone) plaques mounted in brass frames, dating to the early 20th century, likely during the Republic Period (circa 1912–1940).
Each bookend measures 7 inches high x 4.25 inches wide x 4 inches deep, with the oval plaques themselves approximately 4.5 inches high x 3.5 inches wide. The translucent stone—likely nephrite jade or a pale green hardstone—is intricately pierced with traditional Chinese foliate and floral motifs, possibly including chrysanthemum or peony forms, symbolizing beauty, renewal, and scholarly refinement.
The plaques are set within oval brass bezels and supported by stylized openwork brass stands with a stepped Art Deco–influenced base. The cutout pattern in the brass foot mimics traditional Chinese lattice windows and provides visual lightness and stability. The reverse of each base is stamped “CHINA,” consistent with export requirements from the early 20th century for goods entering the U.S. under the McKinley Tariff Act.
This pair is both decorative and functional—representing the intersection of East Asian artistic tradition and Western utility. They are ideal for collectors of scholar’s objects, chinoiserie, or early 20th-century export furnishings.
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition with minor wear and oxidation to brass surfaces. The jade panels show natural inclusions and light surface age but remain intact and structurally sound.

Pair of Art Deco Gilt Iron WPA Style Foundry Men Bookends Signed NMF 1936
USA, 1936
A rare and striking pair of Art Deco gilt iron bookends, crafted in 1936 during the WPA era and American Deco period. These sculptural bookends are a fine example of the era's unique blend of Greco-Roman classical art with modern industrial design. Each bookend stands 10.5 inches high, 6.5 inches wide, and 2.75 inches deep, featuring a subtly detailed silhouette of a muscular, shirtless foundryman pouring molten metal into a crucible.
The design captures the strength and dignity of the working man, a theme prevalent during the WPA period, which sought to honor and celebrate American labor through art. The gilt iron finish adds a touch of elegance and durability, ensuring these pieces are both functional and visually captivating.
Each bookend is stamped with "NMF" on the left side and the date "1936" on the right, confirming their authenticity and historical significance. This rare pair of bookends is not only a functional accessory but also a piece of American history, reflecting the spirit of the 1930s. Ready to be placed and enjoyed, they make a perfect addition to any collection of Art Deco or WPA-era memorabilia...
