18th Century Spanish Studded Leather Trunk with Lockable Compartments
About the Item
With two lockable compartments on the front façade, this studded leather trunk is a very unique storage piece. Hand-crafted in Spain during the 1700s, the trunk is well-engineered, with adequate storage space in the interior in addition to four pull-out drawers.
The domed top trunk has been covered with dark brown leather affixed by hundreds of brass nailheads, mainly orientated in S-scroll patterns. A pendant hasp (which still aligns with the keyplate) also functions as a pull for the lid. The pierced foliate escutcheon on the facing has two similar half-columns flanking the old keyhole, although the lock has been removed. There are still two functioning locks, one that opens the drawer (2 ¾” H x 26 ¼” W x 15 ¾” D) in the lower left corner of the trunk, and another for the door in the lower right that fronts three drawers with circular pulls (2 ¼” H x 15 ½” W x 15 ½” D). All four drawers and the inside of the door are lined with a teal fabric that is also used on the split-level compartments beneath the lid. Four carved and stylized wooden paw feet raise the trunk off the floor, which tell us this was not intended to serve as a traveling trunk. These feet not only make for a grander presentation, but furniture makers knew that it would help prevent damage from mold and insects, as floors in the 18th century were typically very damp. Today our highly decorative Spanish studded leather trunk with lockable compartments can be used in any room that requires storage.

Long circa 1800 Gothic Style Oak Board Trunk from France
Located in Dallas, TX
This is an unusually long Gothic style trunk from France, measuring nearly 6.5 feet long. It is carved from thick oak planks, and it dates to circa 1800. The trunk has well carved characteristic Gothic ornamentation on all of the front panels, while the rest of the piece remains simple, except a small molding to the lid. The big oak panels are joined by dowel reinforced mortise and tenon construction.
The long single plank lid is attached by iron hinges and opens to reveal a large rectangular space which reveals how all the boards were assembled. There is also a latch and keyhole at the center. 18th Century Spanish Repousse Copper and Brass Brazier Bowl
Located in Dallas, TX
This exquisite copper bowl is a piece of artistry, designed to bring comfort and warmth to the user during winter months. Crafted with utmost care and skill, it features ornate brass handles with two concentric circle mounts, S-scroll and roundel handle designs – all intricately detailed for an elegant effect. The rim has been thinly rolled to showcase the lobed crenellation alternating with ovals, a testament to the artisan’s deft touch and meticulous attention to detail. The main body of the bowl is adorned with chased roundels, hammered from underneath in a process known as repoussé. This technique imparts a relief-like effect to the surface, enhancing the visual depth and texture of the piece. The reservoir is yet another testament to the artisan’s mastery, adorned with five volutes surrounded by intermittent roundels over a lightly fluted background. The bowl was designed to hold hot coals, serving a practical purpose of warming the legs and feet during winter months while seated at the table. Today, it would make a lovely addition to an antique copper collection.
