Antique 19th Century Anglo-Indian Haveli Trunk with Iron-Clad Fittings

About the Item

A mid-19th century, Anglo-Indian Trunk with original ribbed iron fittings. The trunk or chest is made in solid teak wood and richly decorated with hammered and forged iron strappings. It has a hinged top hatch that can be locked by the use of a forged steel pin. The iron-bound coffer box originates in the Northern Indian state Rajasthan and dates circa 1850. The trunk was traditionally used as patio storage in Indian Havelis. A haveli is a traditional townhouse or mansion in the Indian subcontinent, usually one with historical and architectural significance. Condition details: The trunk has been repaired in our workshop. Some of the iron straps were missing and the wheels underneath the trunk were worn. The missing straps were replaced by newly made hand forged straps from period steel. The wheels and axels were fixated so the trunk has a solid Stand. The whole piece was gently cleaned and a new protective wax layer was applied. The trunk is now in a very solid and still authentic condition.
