Period Louis XIV Oak and Iron Domed Trunk, Northeast France, Circa 1700
About the Item
A fantastic example of a period Louis XIV trunk, the oak body, which features a domed top, is bound with ornate iron strapwork. The trunk originated in northeast France and was hand-crafted circa 1700, towards the latter part of the reign of Louis XIV.
Five pierced foliate straps run from the back of the lid to the base of the front façade, affixed by numerous small rosettes. The middle strap is interrupted on the front by an escutcheon adorned with an elaborate display of a fleur de lys margent set amongst pierced leaf curls and a round pull. Each side is adorned with a scalloped strap at the bottom, while the arched section of the lid is embellished with a crenelated border. A thick ovate handle with a twisted noix and etched nail head terminals is attached to each side via a large foliate mount, set between additional foliate strapwork. The handles afford some portability to the trunk, which sits on four six-inch thick flattened bun feet (the feet are not original to the trunk but were salvaged from an early 1700s furniture). Thick hinges allow the lid to open quite wide, while a pair of locking arms in the interior prevents the trunk from tipping over when fully opened. Our impressive Louis XIV oak and iron domed trunk is the perfect accessory for blankets in a bedroom or wherever storage is needed, such as a living or game room.

Long circa 1800 Gothic Style Oak Board Trunk from France
Located in Dallas, TX
This is an unusually long Gothic style trunk from France, measuring nearly 6.5 feet long. It is carved from thick oak planks, and it dates to circa 1800. The trunk has well carved characteristic Gothic ornamentation on all of the front panels, while the rest of the piece remains simple, except a small molding to the lid. The big oak panels are joined by dowel reinforced mortise and tenon construction.
The long single plank lid is attached by iron hinges and opens to reveal a large rectangular space which reveals how all the boards were assembled. There is also a latch and keyhole at the center. This rare trunk would be perfect at the foot of a king size bed, an accent piece under a tall tapestry...
